Theo's first race off novice plates (at Whilton Mill Kart Club), and what a challenging start it was! Not only were most of the SuperOne kids in town, but the weather was constantly changing and the circuit itself was suffering some serious technical difficulties...
After 3 false starts (one of them quite startling!), Heat 1 finally got under way. Theo, starting in 25th, straight away dropped 2 positions at the start thanks to being loaded into the 1st corner, but he gradually recovered some places and finished where he had started. If only he had been more clinical with his overtaking, he had enough pace to clear the pack he was stuck in.
Heat 2 was a nightmare as the kids couldn't seem to get started cleanly without a lot of barging about, so the officials ended up cancelling the whole heat and Theo ended up getting the position he was due to start in, ie 9th.
By Heat 3, the heavens had opened up. 31 brave Honda Cadets took to the track, but again, more loading on the start caused Theo to spin and collide with someone else, dropping him from 11th to last but one and damaging his chassis. He got his head down though and drove brilliantly to finish about 21st. However, the circuit's live timing had failed with a few laps to go, so we have no idea where he finished up. The live timing system has him down as 23rd, robbing him of a few places after a fine recovery drive with a damaged kart.
To finish off the day, the weather got worse and the gremlins in the circuit's electrics won the battle, and the event was cancelled without any finals being run. So we have NO idea where we all ended up!
Anyway, we got Theo's 1st "yellow plate" race out of the way in one piece, and some valuable lessons were learned. Thanks again to Mike Spencer and Rob Hanscomb of Global Karting (Fantastic team)!! Thanks also to RPM Power (great engines) and ZipKart (fantastic chassis), and to Dean Cornish for the great advice on how to approach your first yellow plate race. And well done to our good friend Harry Restall for a great drive, particularly in Heat3.
